At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
