Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
