Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
