The Evolution of a Cult tends to be marked by specific steps.

1. The Big Idea

A dominant personality or figureheads propose an innovative concept that promises a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to confront the system overseas. The gunships are circling. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. One individual, naked, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently as a statement, has come staggering from the field and is being led away with discretion towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Do you ever miss the start, when everything was fresh? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders promise a reboot, optimism ahead, support, salvation together with shared faith in the method.

What did it represent back then? Players celebrating basking in glory. Body art. Strength. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Oh sure, England’s players often say they don’t use the label, amusingly as it’s denied, what did we see?

But we know what it is. It’s the player executing a stroke so depraved it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes at his peak, a look that says: focused titan, beard made of wood, natural look, genuinely raw you wouldn’t be surprised to notice and see him playing on the ground shirtless and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure in a waistcoat, uttering phrases such as we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the vibe, for quite a long time, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of key phrases. These ideas can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Am I alone? The reaction, the outrage, the disappointment following the initial loss seems too strong, unwarranted. The performance was poor on the field, as they often do in Australia. And this is the real point. It’s all cults. Bazball was a cult as the game has its own culture. Or rather, English cricket has always been a cult, a circle, an elite gathering, a closed world with a long history of ceremonial past defining it. This has always been where influence is guarded. It’s the colonial game of the nation, the original sports washers. And surprisingly, the country is a phenomenon, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.

The players have been isolated in this environment from a young age. In trying to escape from it, to foster positivity, they are just repeating their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a new team and a leader who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.

Stay present. Embrace challenges. However much you change, you remain stuck.
